Don’t Miss Loon Mountain Ski Resort
One of the best things about staying at our White Mountains Bed and Breakfast – apart from the more obvious luxury accommodations and service-oriented hospitality – is our proximity to so many attractions in the White Mountains. Cannon Mountain Ski Resort and Franconia Notch are just 10 minutes away, and in 30 minutes or less, you can be at either Loon Mountain Ski Resort or Bretton Woods.
Of the many places to go skiing in New Hampshire this winter, Loon Mountain Ski Resort is one of our favorites. Not only is this an accessible place to go skiing in New Hampshire, with runs suitable for all levels and types of skiers, but it’s also known to have one of the best terrain parks in New Hampshire. In fact, Loon Mountain Ski Resort has six total terrain parks!
To reach the peak of Loon Mountain Ski Resort, you get to travel in one of the longest and most scenic rides in the White Mountains. The four-person Gondola Skyride is a popular attraction year-round, but this 1.3-mile trip is best followed up by a trip down the slopes in winter. Loon Peak is just one of the three peaks encompassed by Loon Mountain Ski Resort, though. In total, there are 13 lifts at Loon Mountain Ski Resort, servicing 73 skiable runs and plenty of tree skiing.
The highest summit at Loon Mountain Ski Resort is North Peak, whose summit stands at just over 3,000 feet. The overall vertical drop is an impressive 2,190 feet. The longest trail at Loon Mountain Ski Resort is a wonderful 2.5 miles, highlighting one of our favorite things about this ski destination: You can enjoy lovely long spans of time on the mountain and far less time standing around in long lines.
Apart from being one of our favorite places to go skiing in New Hampshire, Loon Mountain Ski Resort also has a variety of fun events and festivals throughout the year, including their ever-popular NH Highland Games & Festival each September. They’ve already released the dates for this fantastic event in 2024, so it’s never too early to plan and secure your lodging!
More Great Skiing in New Hampshire
Though there’s plenty to love about skiing at Loon Mountain Ski Resort, it’s just one of the fantastic destinations for skiing in New Hampshire. There are plenty more New Hampshire ski resorts worth visiting, including the closest one to us, Cannon Mountain Ski Resort. The next closest place for skiing in New Hampshire is Bretton Woods on Mount Washington, but other great places include Wildcat Mountain and Attitash Mountain Resort.
Each of these New Hampshire Ski Resorts offers something different, and they all have skiable terrain for all levels of skiers. Spend all your time at one or a day at each; otherwise, get ready for a fantastic adventure skiing in the White Mountains!
- Cannon Mountain Ski Resort is home to the popular Aerial Tramway, which can move 70 people at a time, giving Cannon Mountain Ski Resort an edge on uphill capacity compared to other New Hampshire ski resorts. There are also nine more chair lifts and tow ropes. The summit of Cannon Mountain Ski Resort stands at 4,080 feet, the tallest of all other New Hampshire ski resorts. Here, you’ll also find the Tuckerbrook learning area features four chairlifts and 14 runs just for beginners, not to mention three terrain parks for skiers and snowboarders.
- Bretton Woods is one of the most popular places for skiing in New Hampshire. It’s the largest of New Hampshire’s Ski Resorts, featuring 63 trails and 35 glades, all accessed by ten lifts. This includes the Bretton Woods Skyway 8-passenger Gondola. Another fantastic aspect of Bretton Woods is its Nordic Ski Center, one of our favorite places for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
- Wildcat Mountain Resort, popular with season ticket holders for the Epic Pass, is one of the prettiest places to go skiing in New Hampshire. As you ski down various runs here, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Mountain Washington and the Presidential Range – especially on a bluebird day. The vertical drop of Wildcat Mountain Resort is an impressive 2,100 feet, encompassing plenty of diverse terrain. Thanks to their high-speed quad chair, you can be on the slopes and skiing in less than 10 minutes!
- Attitash Mountain Resort is the farthest from us on this list, but it’s also another place to participate in the Epic Pass. Like Loon Mountain Ski Resort, Attitash Mountain Resort is comprised of more than one peak. Here, you’ll be skiing Attitash and Bear Peak, which combined feature eight ski lifts and 68 runs. One of the benefits of driving a bit further to go skiing in New Hampshire is you’ll encounter far fewer people here. Not only that, but it’s traditional New England-style skiing with plenty of challenging tree-lined terrain and wide-open runs. It’s also another favorite for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
