Franconia Notch State Park isn’t just an ordinary State Park. It’s a place filled with spectacular scenery and untold wonders. There’s a reason it’s one of the leading attractions in the White Mountains, let alone the entirety of New England! Bordered on the south by the unforgettable Flume Gorge and in the north by the scenic Echo Lake, Franconia Notch State Park is a delightful place to visit at any time of year – and it’s just ten minutes from our New Hampshire Bed and Breakfast! We’re not only one of the best places to stay near Franconia Notch State Park, but we’re also the closest!
Once you’ve arrived and parked at Franconia Notch State Park, you can enjoy miles upon miles of hiking trails, biking trails, an aerial tramway that takes you to the top of Cannon Mountain, rock climbing, birding, fishing, or just relaxing, surrounded by the gentle sounds of Mother Nature. It’s easy to see why visiting this magnificent park is one of the top things to do in the White Mountains. A few highlights of Franconia Notch State Park include:
The Flume Gorge is, without a doubt, the absolute highlight of your visit to Franconia Notch State Park. The Flume is open from May – November and is a natural 800 ft. long gorge. As you walk through the gorge, walls of granite rise from between 70-90 feet above you and are only separated by 12-20 feet of space. At the top of the gorge is Avalanche Falls, a 45-foot waterfall.
The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was North America’s first passenger aerial tramway and has operated since 1938. You’ll enjoy a scenic 8-minute ride to the top of the 4,080-foot summit of Cannon Mountain, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The tramway is open from May – October.
The Basin, a large pothole in the Pemigewasset River, was formed around 25,000 years ago by a glacier. It’s a beautiful granite bowl and easily accessible just off the main highway through the Franconia Notch.
Echo Lake is a beautiful and serene place to spend the day. It offers gorgeous views of Lafayette and Cannon Mountain and is an excellent place for fishing and boating. Boat rentals begin for the season in May.
Artists Bluff Trail
Though there are plenty of fantastic hiking trails throughout Franconia Notch State Park, one of the best trails to take is the Artists Bluff Trail. The Artists Bluff Trail is relatively short, at just 1.5 miles, but it leads the way to a breathtaking view over Echo Lake, with distant views of Cannon Mountain and Franconia Notch itself. It’s a beautiful hike any time of year, but it offers some of the best views of New Hampshire fall foliage each autumn.
