Things to do in the White Mountains in Fall
The White Mountains of New Hampshire are a popular getaway destination. In the summer, people come for the endless hiking opportunities in the area, and in the winter they come in droves for the opportunity to ski at the area’s legendary ski resorts. But fall is a special season unto itself, which brings visitors from all over the world for the chance to witness the glorious fall foliage this area is known for.
Though it’s not an exact science as to when fall foliage will reach its peak, there are patterns that repeat year after year. Typically, fall foliage really starts to pick up in late September, with the peak coming sometime in early-mid October. And, while gazing up at these stunning colors is enough to make anyone fall in love with the White Mountains, there is far more to do than just admire the beauty.
Here are 10 of our favorite things to do in the White Mountains this fall:
- The aerial tram at Cannon Mountain takes you to the breathtakingly beautiful mountain summit, from which you’ll enjoy spectacular views out over the White Mountain range. For yet another view opportunity, you can also ride the gondola at Loon Mountain to the top of that ski area.
- One of our favorite things to do in the White Mountains is visiting Franconia Notch State Park, home to the stunning Flume Gorge. Just a short 2-mile hike will take you through the narrow Flume Gorge, where you’ll also see covered bridges, amazing waterfalls, a scenic pool, and incredible mountain views. There’s more to do at Franconia Notch State Park, too, including hiking Artists Bluff Trail to an incredible view over Echo Lake and biking on the park’s trails.
- Take in the majestic views from the Mt. Washington Auto Road, which leads you to breathtaking views at the summit of Mt. Washington.
- You don’t have to drive to the top of Mount Washington to see the views. You can also ride to the top on the Cog Railway, which is certainly one of the most unique things to do in the White Mountains.
- The White Mountains aren’t only for adventure, either. Spend an afternoon wine Tasting at Seven Birches Winery at Loon Mountain.
- Get a taste of the White Mountains at Harman’s Cheese and Country Store.
- There are plenty of great hikes in the mountains here, but not all hikes need to be strenuous mountain climbs. There are also plenty of waterfalls to visit in the area, which are very pretty when surrounded by the vibrant colors of fall. Read a previous blog for our favorite waterfalls in the area.
- Another popular thing to do in the White Mountains is to view covered bridges, of which there are plenty! As an added bonus in the fall, you’ll find that many of the bridges are framed by gorgeous fall foliage.
- Drive one of the most popular fall foliage drives in America, the Kancamagus Highway. This drive passes through the heart of the White Mountains, offering you the very best scenery around. Another great scenic drive in the White Mountains is the 100-mile Pinkham Notch Loop, which offers spectacular views of the Presidential Range.
- Unwind and enjoy dinner at our award-winning restaurant. The table is yours for the night to sip, savor, and unwind.
