What to Know About the Mount Washington Hike

The sign and rocks at the summit of the Mount Washington Hike in New Hampshire

The Mount Washington Summit in New Hampshire’s White Mountains stands at an impressive 6,288 feet, making it the highest peak in the Northeast and home to some of the country’s most intense and unpredictable weather. Though there are some low-effort ways to get to the Mount Washington Summit, there’s one adventure that’s saved for the fittest and bravest among us: the Mount Washington hike.

Hiking is one of the top things to do in the White Mountains. It’s your best chance to breathe fresh mountain air, soak in the jaw-dropping views, and challenge yourself. There are plenty of great hikes in the White Mountains, too, including easy treks through the woods to trails like the Mount Washington Hike that will challenge even the most experienced among us. While the payoff from the Mount Washington hike is incredible, the climb is truly no joke. It’s a strenuous trek with steep inclines, rocky terrain, and sudden weather shifts, so it’s best suited for seasoned hikers who are well-prepared.

You don’t have to conquer Mount Washington to enjoy the region’s natural beauty. Head into Franconia Notch State Park for the day – it’s just a few minutes down the road from our New Hampshire Inn! There, you’ll find the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway and the stunning Flume Gorge, plus plenty more things to do. Take a scenic drive along the Kancamagus Highway, especially as New Hampshire’s fall foliage starts to peak out, or spend a lazy afternoon wandering through local shops and artisan markets. There’s also a growing food and craft beer scene worth checking out.

The Iconic Mount Washington Hike

The Mount Washington Hike has earned its legendary status for good reason. It’s not just because of the elevation or its status as the tallest peak in the northeast, though. That certainly helps. Its reputation as one of the most notorious climbs in the country comes because of the unpredictability you’ll face as you trek up to the summit. The weather can be unpredictable, even in the summer, and the terrain is rocky with some intense inclines at times.

The most popular route to take to the Mount Washington Summit is the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. It starts off so gently that you’ll start to wonder what all the fuss is about. But as the climbs and rock scrambles start, you’ll begin to see how the Mount Washington Hike earned its reputation. The Tuckerman Ravine Trail is only 2.4 miles long, but you’ll gain a stunning 1,800 feet in elevation in that short mileage.

The trail starts at the Pinkham Notch Visitors Center, gradually making its way up to Herman Lake. From there, the climbs really begin as you climb off the floor of the ravine. As you reach the top of the ravine, you’ll meet up with the Alpine Garden Trail. This area is known for rare alpine plants and wildflowers, offering stunning blooms for hikers to enjoy, particularly in mid-June to mid-July. As you leave this junction, you’ll have 1,000 more feet in elevation gain to go – but it’s up a steep, rocky cone.

The Mount Washington Hike is covered in snow for much of the year, sometimes even into the early summer months. Even when the weather at the trailhead looks nice, it can change in minutes. The Mount Washington Summit is also known for some of the highest wind speeds ever recorded. There’s a reason there’s a weather observatory at the summit! The weather, the rock scrambles, and the intense inclines are all worth it, though. As you come out at the top of the Mount Washington Hike, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Presidential Range and beyond.

The Mount Washington hike isn’t for everyone, but it’s fun to dream about (and act on) challenges! If it’s not for you, though, don’t worry. There are plenty of places to go hiking in New Hampshire, all of which are rewarding in different ways. Whether you’re looking for sweeping ridge views, waterfalls, or alpine ponds, here’s a short list of a few more hikes in the White Mountains to consider this summer.

Other Top Hikes in the White Mountains:

  1. The Franconia Ridge Loop trail is a challenging but wildly scenic loop with extended ridge walking and panoramic views.
  2. The Arethusa Falls Trail is a moderate hike leading to one of New Hampshire’s tallest and most dramatic waterfalls.
  3. Mount Lafayette via Old Bridle Path and Greenleaf Trail offers hikers high-elevation hiking and jaw-dropping summit views, like those on the Mount Washington Hike, without the intensity.
  4. Take the Welch-Dickey Loop for a shorter New Hampshire hike that offers open ledges and views that far exceed the effort required.
  5. The Mount Pemigewasset Trail is a moderate hike, at just under 4 miles round trip, but it offers the same exceptional views as some of the more extensive hikes in Franconia Notch State Park.
  6. The Artists Bluff Trail on Bald Mountain is a relatively easy 1.5-mile hike in Franconia Notch. It offers beautiful views of Echo Lake, and it’s magical in the fall!
  7. Mount Chocorua is one of the most striking peaks in the area, and at the top, you’ll savor the stunning 360-degree view.
  8. Middle and North Sugarloaf offer a shorter trek into the mountains for those beautiful views you’re after!
