Stunning view as far as the eye can see of New Hampshire fall foliage

Everywhere you go in New England from mid-September through at least mid-October, you’ll be rewarded with a stunningly vibrant display of fall foliage. It’s no different in New Hampshire. In fact, we think New Hampshire fall foliage is something special, particularly if you head up to the stunning peaks of the White Mountains, which just so happen to be home to the highest peaks in the northeastern part of the country.

From the towering heights of Mount Washington, you can take in a birdseye view of the colors of fall in New Hampshire – views that are simply beyond compare. But mountain peaks are just one of the many great ways to enjoy the splendor of New Hampshire fall foliage. There’s an incredible range of things to do in the White Mountains, especially in the fall. Head out for a scenic drive on our many rural roads, travel the famed Kancamangus Highway, chase waterfalls all across the region, hike to breathtaking viewpoints, or ride aerial tramways and unique mountain railways to take in the views.

It won’t matter what you do while you’re here. You’ll be able to enjoy some of New Hampshire’s most captivating fall colors around every twist and turn on the road and trails. The Best New Hampshire Fall Foliage

We talk about New Hampshire fall foliage every year, and that’s because it’s truly just that mesmerizing. Millions of people descend on New England every fall to witness Mother Nature’s most dramatic transformation, and they come to participate in all kinds of scenic activities and adventures. It may feel a little early to talk about New Hampshire’s fall display, but with so many people making plans to view the fiery display, the farther in advance you plan, the more likely you are to enjoy a getaway somewhere as extraordinary as our New Hampshire Inn.

If you’ve never seen New Hampshire fall foliage before, you’re in for a treat. The beauty of New Hampshire in fall is unmatched, and you’ll have a front-row seat to some of the best of it at our New Hampshire Inn. We’re situated in the White Mountains Region of the state, just minutes from one of the top attractions in the area: Franconia Notch State Park. There, you’ll find the breathtaking Flume Gorge, one of our favorite fall hikes, the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, and so much more.

It won’t take long to see why the White Mountains are one of New England’s premier destinations for leaf peeping. Peak colors typically emerge in mid-September and can last into October, depending on the year. Below, we share some of our top picks for savoring New Hampshire fall foliage.

  1. One of the best things to do in the White Mountains in fall is to take in the views of New Hampshire fall foliage from the peak of Mount Washington. To get there, take a unique journey on the Cog Railway. Of course, you could also drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road—or take on one of the most challenging hikes in the country!
  2. Aside from heading to the top of Mount Washington, you won’t want to miss a drive along the famed Kancamagus Highway. It’s one of the most popular fall drives in the country, but it’s one of many scenic drives through the White Mountains.
  3. For a gorgeous view from the skies, consider taking in New Hampshire fall foliage from the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway or the scenic gondola at Loon Mountain.
  4. You can also skim through the trees and go ziplining with Alpine Adventures.
  5. How about some hiking? It’s one of the best ways to enjoy an immersive adventure amidst New Hampshire fall foliage. There are plenty of great fall hikes to consider, but our favorite is the Artists Bluff Trail at Franconia Notch State Park. You also should not miss a chance to walk through the stunning Flume Gorge.
  6. Fall is a great time to hike or drive to the stunning waterfalls in the White Mountains, where you’ll witness thunderous water crashing down, framed beautifully by the fiery hues of fall.
  7. Another great way to catch our scenery ablaze with color is to tour New Hampshire Covered Bridges. They’re beautiful any time of year, particularly when surrounded by New Hampshire fall foliage.
  8. You don’t have to go on epic adventures to enjoy New Hampshire’s fall colors. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy a bit of wine while gazing out at the scenic fall views. A great place to enjoy wine locally is Seven Birches Winery. We’d be remiss to mention our gorgeous tavern and porch, too – another place to sit back and relax with a drink in hand while gazing at the views just beyond our property.
