Heading to the Top of Mount Washington

Mount Washington Cog Railway in New HampshireThere is little doubt that one of the most spectacular vistas in the White Mountains of New Hampshire comes from the top of Mount Washington.  The summit of Mount Washington, situated at an altitude of 6, 288 feet, is the highest peak in the White Mountains, and on clear days, offers views that extend well beyond New Hampshire and into Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean. At the summit sits Mount Washington State Park, a 60-acre parcel of land that borders the White Mountain National Forest. Adventurous (and fit) souls can hike to the summit, but most visitors take the Mount Washington Cog Railway or the Mount Washington Auto Road; both worthwhile adventures to add to your itinerary. Make your plans to visit us this summer at the Sugar Hill Inn in New Hampshire today!

Mount Washington Cog Railway

By far, the most popular and interesting way to get to the summit of this incredible mountain is via the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which has been in operation since 1869.  The Cog Railway, commonly referred to simply as “the cog,” was the world’s first mountain-climbing railway of its kind. The round-trip journey to the top takes approximately 3 hours, and it is recommended to buy tickets in advance. At the summit, you’ll find a viewing deck with panoramic views, Tip Top House–an 1853 Hiker’s hostel, a Summit Marker, and the Sherman Adams Visitors Center. Additionally, the Cog Railway Museum at the base offers visitors a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the nation’s most iconic railways.
